Handle knob size difference between SHIMANO and DAIWA

General size reels from 1000 to 4000 usually have normal size handle knob.

We call them "SHIMANO A type", "DAIWA S size".

Ex.) 14 STELLA C3000XG "SHIMANO A type"		Ex.) 16 CERTATE 2510RPE-H "DAIWA S size"

Large size reel like STELLA SW or SALTIGA have large size handle knob.

We call them "SHIMANO B type", "DAIWA L size".

Ex.) 08 STELLA SW 8000HG "SHIMANO B type"		Ex.) 10 SALTIGA 5000H "DAIWA L size"

It is impossible to attach "SHIMANO B type" knob to "SHIMANO A type".

It is also impossible to attach "DAIWA L size" knob to "DAIWA S size"

Let’s see the detailed reason.


SHIMANO Handle Knob Shaft Structure

No other parts were in the photo to see each parts easily.

Important point is both "knob shaft length /diameter" and "bearing size".

In the left side "A type", diameter is to be measured from the bottom point (blue portion in the picture).
Diameter is 4mm, 2pcs 740ZZ（ID 4mm×OD 7mm×T2.5mm）size bearing are set for both bottom and tip portion.

Right side "B type" knob shaft is longer and thicker than "A type". And larger sized bearings are equipped.
In the knob shaft, bottom diameter is 5mm and tip is 4mm. Bottom bearing is 950ZZ(ID 5mm×OD 9mm×t 3mm）and tip is 940ZZ(ID 4mm×OD 9mm×t 4mm).

"B type" handle knob structure is thicker and larger than "A type". Total shaft length is totally different form each other.

As a result, you can tell that both handle knob does not have any compatibility.
You can disassemble handle knob to confirm whether you have "A type" or "B type" according to the picture.

DAIWA Handle Knob Shaft Structure

In the left side "DAIWA S size", handle knob shaft diameter is 4mm and 2pcs 740ZZ（ID 4mm×OD 7mm×t 2.5mm）size bearings are set for both bottom and tip portion.
Bearing size is the same structure as SHIMANO A type.

In the right side "DAIWA L size", handle knob shaft diameter is 5mm and 2pcs 850ZZ (ID 5mm×OD 8mm×t 2.5mm) size bearings are set for both bottom and tip portion.

As you can tell, "L size" bearing and shaft structure are larger and longer than "S size".

With regards to handle knobs which are possible to be attached to "SHIMANO B type" and "DAIWA L size", there are not so many series. So, you can find offshore type from the link above.

You could understand each maker's size difference between bearing and shaft diameter.
Both "SHIMANO A type"and "DAIWA S size" use same type 2 bearings, 740ZZ (ID4mm×OD7mm×t2.5mm).

Then, is it possible to attach DAIWA handle knob to SHIMANO handle or the reverse?
We have lots of those questions though, actually it is impossible to attach knob without additional customizing.

Lets see that reason.


Adjust the Knob Shaft Bearing Distance

Left side is "SHIMANO A type", right side is "DAIWA S size".
Noticing point is shaft's bottom portion.

As SHIMANO's shaft has a few mm thicker portion in the bottom, you can not fit the bearing into that portion. That position shall be a bit upper of thicker portion, not in the bottom of shaft.

In DAIWA's shaft case, you can fit the bearing to the bottom of shaft.

Please see not total length of shaft but the distance from the bottom to tip.
As shown in the picture with pink line, you can tell the length difference which SHIMANO's shaft length is shorter and DAIWA's longer.




Above is simple pictures visualized the inside of handle knob structure.
They suggest where bearings are set.

At a glance, it seems like same structure, but there is no handle knob compatibility between SHIMANO and DAIWA.

However, most of custom maker’s handle knobs are compatible with both SHIMANO and DAIWA.

Let’s see why it is possible to do like that.


How to Use Adjustable Collar and Washer

This is the simplest Avail’s adjustable collar example.

When you purchase custom makers’s handle knob, there are adjustable collars or washers which are made from plastic or metal.
このパーツをシャフトやハンドルノブに取り付けすることで、シマノ・ダイワに両対応することが可能になります。




This is an example which Avail’s adjustable collar and bearings are set to DAIWA’s handle.

You see?
The adjustable collar enables DAIWA’s reel shaft to make it thicker and raise the bottom up of bearing position. Then, they are being same shaft length between SHIMANO and DAIWA.

By doing this custom, it is getting possible to set SHIMANO’s handle knob to DAIWA’s knob shaft.


Important Point When You Exchange Handle Knob

With regards to genuine handle shafts, SHIMANO is shorter and DAIWA is longer.

･ After setting the adjustable collar to the bottom of DAIWA handle knob shaft, you can make it as same length structure as SHIMANO’s shaft.

・ You can make DAIWA's handle knob shaft shorter with having the adjustable color, but you can not make SHIMANO's handle knob shaft longer.
(It is impossible to grind the thicker portion.)

･ In case of DAIWA handle knob shaft, you can set DAIWA handle knob without doing anything.
If you would like to set SHIMANO handle knob to DAIWA, you can set it after putting attached adjustable collar.

・ No DAIWA's handle knob can be set to SHIMANO handle knob shaft.
(Frequent question: Can we set DAIWA cork knob or ZAION knob to SHIMANO's genuinehandle knob shaft? → No.)
